If you’ve been scrolling TikTok or YouTube and keep hearing about the “10-step Korean skincare routine”, you might be wondering: Where do I even start?
Don’t worry — you’re not alone. Korean skincare (also known as K-beauty) can seem complicated at first, but at its heart, it’s about nourishing your skin instead of stripping it. This guide breaks it down step-by-step — no confusing jargon, no 20-step routines — just what you actually need to know to build a glowing, simple routine that works.

🌿 What Makes Korean Skincare Different?
Korean skincare focuses on hydration, prevention, and consistency. Instead of harsh scrubs or drying acne treatments, K-beauty routines use gentle layering to keep your skin balanced and radiant over time.
Key principles include:
Gentle cleansing rather than over-cleansing
Hydrating layers to strengthen your skin barrier
Consistent SPF use to prevent premature aging
Active ingredients that treat concerns gradually and effectively
K-beauty isn’t about perfection — it’s about giving your skin what it needs to be healthy.
The Basic Korean Skincare Routine for Beginners
You don’t need all 10 steps! Here’s the simplified version — 5 core steps that are beginner-friendly and budget-conscious.
1️⃣ Double Cleanse
This is the foundation of Korean skincare.
Step 1: Use an oil cleanser or cleansing balm to remove sunscreen, makeup, and excess oil.
Step 2: Follow with a gentle water-based cleanser to remove any residue.
This keeps your pores clear without stripping moisture. Here's my current obsession: medicube Pink Cleanse & Glow Duo: PDRN Marshmallow Whip Cleanser and PDRN Jelly to Foam Cleanser. If you have sensitive skin or if you are allergic to seafood, you might prefer something like Mixsoon's cleansing duo featuring centella asiatica.
2️⃣ Toner
Unlike Western toners that can be harsh, Korean toners are lightweight hydrators that prep your skin for everything else. They balance your skin’s pH and help serums absorb better. I like to mix and match pore toner pads from medicube depending on my needs for the day.
3️⃣ Essence or Serum
This is the heart of Korean skincare. Essences and serums deliver concentrated ingredients that target specific skin concerns like dryness, dullness, or acne.
For hydration: COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Essence
For brightening: Beauty of Joseon Glow Serum
For anti-aging: Missha Time Revolution First Essence
4️⃣ Moisturizer
No matter your skin type, you need moisture.K-beauty moisturizers focus on hydration, barrier repair, and softness.
Etude Soon Jung 2x Barrier Intensive Cream for sensitive skin
Laneige Water Bank Moisture Cream for a dewy glow
5️⃣ Sunscreen (Morning Only)
This is the most important step of all. Korean sunscreens are famous for their light, non-greasy textures — no white cast, no stickiness.
Apply every morning — even on cloudy days — to keep your skin healthy and youthful.
Optional Steps (Once You’re Ready to Level Up)
Once your basics feel easy, you can slowly add one or two of these:
Exfoliator (1–2x per week) – Try Some By Mi AHA BHA PHA Miracle Toner
Sheet masks (2–3x per week) – Try Mediheal N.M.F. Intensive Hydrating Mask
Eye cream – Try Innisfree Green Tea Seed Eye Cream
Remember: consistency > quantity. Adding too much too fast can irritate your skin.

💡 Tips for Getting Started
Start simple — 3 to 5 steps max
Introduce one new product at a time so you know what’s working
Be patient — most K-beauty products show results after 2–4 weeks
Always patch test new items
Hydration is everything. The dewy “glass skin” look comes from moisture, not makeup.
